Artist Statement

My work reveals hidden spaces and moments, opening them up to uncover mysterious, parallel worlds. I want the audience to feel like they have stumbled upon a secret realm, one of enchantment and meditation, darkness and light. I hope to ignite the audience’s imagination, enhancing their own perceptions of the world.  Perhaps they will look up more often and really see the sky or inspect more carefully the reflections on their car windows, bringing magic into the everyday by finding the magic in the everyday.

The physical world is deeply embedded in the work although it has been carefully stroked, sort of like a poodle with a fancy hairdo.  A quiet humor trickles through. It lets the coiffed worlds I create show their human side, a silent chuckle opening us up to the bounties within. Young girls stab balloons in a rebellious act, urban surfaces pop and gyrate suggesting an endless patter of happy energy, an old wall turns into a space age blob using tin foil. But there is a melancholy alongside of the silliness. For example the old wall is actually an ancient architectural form covering most of Croatia, which is being more and more developed by tourism, changing the country’s landscape forever.

Using drawing, painting, and animation/video, my primary form of expression, I approach my subjects from various angles. With my installation work, I project videos or place them within sculptural objects- the screen disappearing so that we feel less of a division between realities. The videos themselves are carefully crafted moving sculptures, without dialogue their essence as “place” and not as “time” is put forth. This is further enhanced by a lack of narrative or a narrative that can loop or be re-organized. Patterns and textures are combined with landscapes and sets, resulting in all-encompassing environments.
