Float, 1998
12' x 18', Styrofoam, lights, sound installation,
plastics
Float was an underwater styrofoam garden. It enchanted the viewer
with its soft blue lights, but once inside the installation, the artifice
of the materials and the effects of the lights became apparent. Similar
to a stage set or a theme park, the space created in Float was soothing
and light, but ultimately somewhat empty. The materials reflected the
coolness of the sound installation, which was of an artic tundra. The
term Float referes both to the physical state of floating, and also to
the giant parade sculptures- a celebration of the moment, something beautiful,
but temporary.
