Big Blue Viewing Station, 2001
3 video monitors, lights, styrofoam, wood, paint, paper mache, fabric
For this piece I created a viewing station for stop motion animated videos.
Lumpy and lo-tech, I was referencing old science fiction sets. I wanted
to emphasize the human hand in design products and also to create an object
for viewers to touch while they watched the films. Meant to be somewhat
silly, the Big Blue Viewing Station generated a lot of laughs and was
especially popular with the kids. Most people thought it was a giant space
ship, although that was not my intention originally. The underlying circle
was a very large glittery fabric piece, again emphasizing the tactile
quality of the films.
